10. Check Craigslist and other job searching sites. Sometimes, companies post jobs that might not be directly linked to the university, but still take place on campus. For example, corporate companies like Google, Red Bull and ZipCar often hire "campus ambassadors" to spread the word about their product or services on campus. In addition, advocacy organizations like Planned Parenthood, the Human Rights Campaign, and Greenpeace are just a few who hire students to flyer on college campuses.
The No. 3 job: nanny, with a median hourly salary of $12.80. I agree that babysitting can be a lucrative, flexible job for a student, but to work as a full-fledged nanny is much more demanding, and also potentially more lucrative, than this ranking suggests. For instance a listing on job site Indeed.com offers a full-time New York City position caring for one four-year-old boy that pays $30-$35 an hour plus benefits. That job requires a Monday through Friday commitment from 8am to 6pm and five years of experience plus references. Obviously a student’s schedule matters here. But in New York a sitter with an upscale clientele can make at least $25 an hour.
At the top of the list: massage therapist, which pays a median hourly wage of $22. Though some clients want their masseuse to have a certificate showing they’ve trained in Swedish or Shiatsu technique, others will pay based on good word-of-mouth. This job can work well for college kids because they set their own hours and there is more work during evenings and weekends when clients have free time. As with all the jobs on PayScale’s list, the median wage is aggregated from salaries reported across the country. In big cities like L.A. and New York the pay can be much higher. This job requires some entrepreneurial know-how. Massage therapists must market themselves and find clients. Social media skills and a wide network are pluses.
