10. Check Craigslist and other job searching sites. Sometimes, companies post jobs that might not be directly linked to the university, but still take place on campus. For example, corporate companies like Google, Red Bull and ZipCar often hire "campus ambassadors" to spread the word about their product or services on campus. In addition, advocacy organizations like Planned Parenthood, the Human Rights Campaign, and Greenpeace are just a few who hire students to flyer on college campuses.
4. Don't be afraid to ask, "How'd you get your job?" Make use of your peers. If you have any friends who work on campus, see if there are any openings at their workplaces, and if they can connect you with a manager or supervisor who would be willing to take a look at your resume. If you see an acquaintance working somewhere you'd like to work - like the campus Starbucks, for example, or in the dining hall - don't be afraid to ask if their workplace is hiring.
Ugh. I’m so sorry to hear that. You’re not the only freelancer to have gotten lured into one of those sites. My rule of thumb, even as a newbie, was never to accept less than $10 for every 100 words, unless it was a fantastic gig that would get me good exposure. Even if you don’t have a portfolio, you should only take on projects you’ll be proud to show to other people when they ask what you’ve done. It sounds like you are creating good work right now, but unfortunately, it’s for a client who totally doesn’t deserve it.
How to Get It: Customer service is the biggest work-at-home field, with companies including Spiegel, Hilton, Best Western, HSN, 1-800-FLOWERS and many others using at-home reps. Fill out an application with staffing companies such as Arise, Alpine Access, VIPdesk, LiveOps, and Convergys, all of which vet the companies who are hiring through them. If you're a contractor, you may be asked to pay a small fee (between $15 and $35) for a background check. While a fee can be a sign of a scam, independent contractors are responsible for their own expenses.
Microjobs can involve a huge range of different tasks. Some are quite fun, others are bitterly monotonous. One day you might be categorizing YouTube videos, the next writing short product descriptions, and the next recording your voice over and over again to help train Siri-like recognition systems. Many people look for online data entry jobs, and some microjobs are along those lines.
