I agree that babysitting can be a lucrative, flexible job for a student, but to work as a full-fledged nanny is much more demanding, and also potentially more lucrative, than this ranking suggests. For instance a listing on job site Indeed.com offers a full-time New York City position caring for one four-year-old boy that pays $30-$35 an hour plus benefits. That job requires a Monday through Friday commitment from 8am to 6pm and five years of experience plus references. Obviously a student’s schedule matters here. But in New York a sitter with an upscale clientele can make at least $25 an hour.
These are not get-rich-quick opportunities. You will need to work but the potential is there. As an example, the second one on our list is freelance writing. If you're a good writer, you can hit the ground running and earn hundreds of dollars to write once you find the right clients. If you're not a good writer, you may get paid less as you get better and find more clients. The potential is there but so is the work.
Required Job Qualifications: An Associate’s Degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of two years of college in Human Resources or related field. A minimum of two years’ comprehensive benefits administration is required, experience with South Carolina State Retirement System a plus.
